WNBA player Brittney Griner has been sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison for possession of less than 1 gram of cannabis oil in her luggage.
Griner has also protested the National Anthem.
Trump supporters (putting it nicely) committed an insurrection at the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.
The responses to each are really no surprise at this point. The same people who believe Griner deserves to stay in Russia because she “hates America” (for her National Anthem protest) also see nothing wrong with THOUSANDS of people attempting to destroy the UNITED STATES CAPITOL.
Let me say that again. People who literally DESTROYED an HISTORIC AMERICAN LANDMARK are saying that Griner and other Black athletes who don’t stand during one minute of a song are the ones who “hate America.”
I know racism is bad in this country, but sometimes, it still surprises even me as a Black man.
Imagine a few people outside a car dealership protesting the use of certain car parts. Now think of HUNDREDS of people running through the dealership, hurling bricks through vehicle windows, flattening tires and destroying the dealership building.
No one with a functioning brain would say the ones standing outside the dealership “hated” the cars or the dealership more than the others. But that’s exactly what’s happening here.
Yes, there are people saying that Griner should be in prison because of breaking the law over there. I don’t think many of us are disputing that. Even she has admitted to her guilt. But so many more are ADDING jokes about her “not having to hear the National Anthem” and saying, “she can just stay there since she hates America so much.” Her stance on the National Anthem should have absolutely NO bearing on her punishment. Especially not coming from the same ones, who, again, say it with me, kids: DESTROYED AN HISTORIC, NATIONAL LANDMARK, not because of racism, sexism, pedophilia, defense against hostile enemies or anything of that kind. No. They did it because their guy, who already served (almost didn’t make it) a full term didn’t win an election.
When people want to see a Black person suffer more for doing something legal than white people doing something grossly ILLEGAL, that’s the very definition of racism.
Enough said.
